In light of recent events where a friend of mine was suspended for having such a folder, I decided to observe those who had been affected and determined that a logical and calm way to deal with these needs to be made.

"So, Typh," you may ask, "what are 'Needs Improvement' folders, anyway?" Why, my dear readers, they're simply a Favourites folder that some people will dump art in if they deem that the piece 'needs improvement'. Usually, (and I just yanked these from the Newest section on the main page, so I'm not specifically targeting anyone) submissions like

Adopt Points by madadoptsagainthe red hair by OoAquarelaoO and Meloetta by prettyXblueXeyedXone

will be put in these folders, leaving the uploader confused and most likely frustrated. Honestly, and this is my opinion, I think that all art should be dumped in such a folder. Anyway, the target of these folders will definitely want some answers. While I think that going after pictures such as the ones above specifically is a bit biased, the folder maker has an unspoken point. The art needs improvement. Of course, ALL art needs improvement in one way or another, but the folder maker is usually trying to get the point across to 'lesser skilled' targets.

"Oh noes!! Someone put my art in a Needs Improvement folder!! That hurt my feelings!! WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!"

Whoa, there. Whoa. Whoa. Calm down. That's the first step. If you find yourself in such a situation, calm the tits. Freaking out over it will usually lead to unnecessary dArama and bannings (or suspensions). Before breaking down, ask the person with the folder why your art was put in the folder. Usually, the folder's owner will be nice enough to explain and even critique your art. In that case, you might actually end up being friends and everything will be happy sunshine joy.

If the person doesn't respond right away, don't panic about that either. Give them a bit. In the meantime, check the folder for a description about the folder's purpose. Some people will have an explanation in the folder for your convenience.

What you SHOULDN'T do is go to your friends and freak out. That starts a chain reaction, and can cause people to sling threats or spamming, or even harassment. Some people I've seen freaking out over a NI folder made hate groups towards the user, which is just horrible and completely taking it too far. Don't panic, and for goodness sake, don't amass your friends like some sort of lynching party!

If you do not want this person putting your art in the folder, and do not wish to engage in a conversation, block them. Go to your Settings, find your Block List, and type their username there. It removes your art from their folder and they can't add anymore of your art to the folder, ever again. Problem solved!

In fact, if you're going to panic over it, just block anyway. Don't do anything else. Most of the time, the folder makers just drag and drop the pictures in the folder and move on, never making an attempt to contact you. They most likely wouldn't give a damn if you blocked them.

Please note that Needs Improvement folders should NOT be associated with 'Crap' folders. A folder such as that, where a person will just put the art in a folder that says 'Crap', 'Shit Art', etc, is just plain cruel and definitely should be reported. However, please handle such things with the same care as a NI folder and don't panic, just block. The less dArama, the better!

This happened to me and I totally acted way off. I need to apologize to the person who put my art in it.

I believe when you post your art online, don't expect there not to be people who think it needs work or just doesn't like it, I even make a point of letting people know I think my own art sucks before I post

Well, if you think it sucks, you probably shouldn't post it. Don't tear it down before other people get to see it; you'll bias folks against it.

Yep. I left her group saying how rude it was to make a group of haters. Melody is acting like a 2 year old, spazzing about everything.

Hmm, I have to definitely agree that people shouldn't freak out over something like this, that won't get anyone anywhere. I've actually never seen this happen before though, and if it ever happens to me I'll probably just do... nothing honestly. XD Though maybe that's not the best answer either.

I didn't even know this existed. Wow. What a lonely little corner of the interwebs I inhabit.
Anyway -- this was definitely an interesting read. Sounds like it absolutely needed written.
The lack of general common sense on dA just... astounds me. It's ridiculous.

People seriously overreact to things here, and it causes a lot of problems. Sad part is, the problems are all easily avoidable.

Good choice, see some with that folder but TBH...why have the folder if 99% never give advice on how to improve?

It's up to the artist to seek out what's wrong with the image if they wish to improve. There's been too many incidents where advice would be dropped and it would result in a mass bitch fit and a block, so having the folder up which would force the artist to contact would be a lot better and have better results as a baby would just block right on the spot, preventing any conflict. Those who throw a fit regardless then block would end up being reported via spam which is really fun, so win/win/win.

Whether or not it's bad or good doesn't matter, if something's wrong with the image, something's wrong with the image. And from what I see on a daily basis, only rarely does someone point out something with a trolling intent and usually it's still to improve upon the image.

many still find it more hurtful that their art is put in a folder like that n not told WHY it has to be improved, just saying

They need to get over it, usually those who get butthurt over the folder also get butthurt when someone points out something faulty, so it's better to do the folder than to actually tell them straight up. The only way to avoid the butthurt is to avoid the image altogether but if this site is to be considered an art site, people will need to deal with positive and negative critics. And last I heard, this site is determined to become an artsite, even if their actions go against the concept.
